What is CSS
CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. This means you use external or embedded documents that contain style instructions for HTML pages.
Demand for proper layout and appleaing formatting has increased tremendously since the development of the Internet started. The rather stern ways to format pages using only HTML has made way for more modern approaches, resulting in attractive web pages and indeed more visitor friendly content.
The first formatting extras were introduced by the developers of the browsers themselves which resulted in protests from the developers of the internet and HTML code. This was due to the fact that the formatting was browser dependant. So CSS was developed, a method to format pages and even position content in a way that should be supported by each browser.
CSS is used inside the Dreamweaver environment and outside it. During the Dreamweaver Course we teach the students how to make good use of CSS. In the Dreamweaver Course Advanced we teach them how to use CSS on a higher level, giving them more formatting and layout options.
CSS Course, short outline
During this course you will learn CSS in 4 modules. The first module includes coding CSS by hand to get the basics of the CSS syntax. From the second lesson on we shall use Dreamweaver to integrate this beautiful and interesting code into web pages.
You are going to learn CSS by hand and CSS level 1 and 2.
Read on to find out what CSS is and what the course entails.

CSS Course Content
If you did not attend our courses Dreamweaver Course and Dreamweaver Course Advanced chances are you have not leared what CSS is and how you can use it. Since CSS is the standard for formatting and laying out pages it is important to understand how it works if you want to be a web designer.
During the CSS course you will understand what Cascading Style Sheets are and how to use them. You will learn the CSS code from scratch by writing the code by hand. This will allow you to fully understand the syntax and to manipulate it.
After that we shall continue in Dreamweaver. You will create stylesheets and learn how to manage and edit them. You will understand the different types of stylesheets and you will connect files with them or disconnect them. And of course you will not only learn how to format pages but also how to position elements on the pages inside the website. You will learn to do this in a consistent and user-friendly way that allows you to structurize and organise all content in your websites.
For this course you will need a sound knowledge of Dreamweaver. We shall start using Dreamweaver during the second part of this course and we expect you to be able to follow what is addressed. If you do not know how Dreamweaver works you can not attend this course and in that case you are much better off attending the Dreamweaver Course. The Dreamweaver Course addresses CSS level one.
Short outline
The course is very extensive. The following outline is a fraction of what will be addressed.
1. Introduction to the syntax
As a web designer it is important to properly position and lay out your website's content. Layout and positioning are crucial: they form the first thing your visitors will notice.
During the first CSS module of the CSS Course you will get to know the CSS syntax. You will write your first code by hand and learn how to implement it. You will understand what CSS is all about, why it works the way it does and what you can do with it.
The following topics will be addressed during this course lesson.
Getting to know CSS
What is CSS
Developing styles
Naming style elements
Special formatting options
Writing CSS by hand
Implementing CSS styles
2. CSS in the Dreamweaver environment
Now that you know the CSS syntax it is time to work with CSS inside a content management system. To do it all by hand is a very pure way to do things but it is time consuming. Dreamweaver is such a content management system (CMS). You are going to learn how to create styles, special classses and the more advanced options that are available with CSS.
The following topics will be addressed during this course lesson.
CSS in Dreamweaver
Formatting a page
HTML tag styles
Creating classes
Special tag styles
Understanding pseudo classes
3. CSS and positioning level 1
During your work as a web designer you will soon feel the need to present content in a good and clear way and to be able to position elements in an attractive manner. This module from the CSS course is dedicated to positioning HTML elements on a page. You will get to know the first layout options that CSS has to offer
During this module of the CSS course you will get acquainted with the latest techniques CSS has to offer. Using step by step material and clear instructions you will position elements and create a good web page layout from scratch. After that you will build a website using the techniques that were addressed. Your coach and your fellow students will evaluate the result.
The following topics will be addressed during this course lesson.
CSS and layout
CSS and document structure
Sharing style definitions
Exchanging styles and other formatting instructions
Different types of CSS formatting
Creating a page and website using CSS
4. CSS and positioning level 2
During the previous lesson you learned how to use a new technique within the CSS system. But you will notice some things are pretty difficult to achieve and that others are impossible. This is why you will get to know even more options to allow you to really create the web page and design you want.
The following topics will be addressed during this course lesson.
What are positioning types
Getting acquainted with the different positioning types in CSS
Creating a layout in level 2
Using absolute, relative, static and other types of positioning
Structuring a web page
Building a CSS-driven layout and website
At the end of this course you will be able to develop and maintain a CSS driven website using different types of positioning techniques.
Course intensivity
All our courses offer intensive training. This is because we want our students to find a job after the course. To make this even more realistic we keep track of the changes in the world of design and the software updates. Working with very old software versions is not an option unless a student needs to use it. Keeping track of all the changes is very important to us: it makes it possible to be a player in the dynamic, multi media oriented world of design.
Teachers
During our courses you will have a personal coach who is a professional in the world of design. Experience in the field of print and press makes this coach irreplacable while you study. You can ask your coach all the questions you may have and notice you will most often get the answer. While you attend the course you can send your coach your homework files and extra files in which 'things don't work'.
Duration
The course duration depends on the type of training you attend. Go to the course's page to find out more. The most common type of training is group training and personal training, have a look at the options for these courses.
Speed course
Personal and reserved training
5 weeks

Estimated homework time
You will need about 8 hours per lesson. Most students spend even more time because they enjoy the work.
Verwacht denkniveau
Het niveau van de cursus ligt tussen MBO en HBO in. Er wordt van u verwacht dat u thuis zelfstandig kunt werken maar ook goed kunt meekomen in een groep.
Starting dates
The courses start about every two months. Go to this page to see the dates of the courses.
Applying
Go to the course's page or this page to apply. We shall send you an application form to fill out and after we receive it back from you we shall send you the invoice for the course.
Location
The courses are taking place in Amsterdam. Our location is very easily accessed by tram, bus, metro and even train. Of course you can use the car as well. All necessary facilities are available on the premises.
Literature and lesson material
LearningTrain keeps track of the developments of Adobe software. Using our Adobe contacts makes this even easier. The literature we consult is always up to date and the lesson material is often hot from the press.
Applications
We have a trial for you so you can do the homework. But of course you can also download the trial from the Adobe website.
During class we usually use the most recent version of the software and the version before that. This makes sure you are aware of the developments in the software and that you can create the best designs for your projects. The design market is pretty competitive, having the correct software gives you an extra edge.
Operating system
The Adobe applications have ben developed for both Windows and Mac and are available for both operating systems. Working with Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Flash means it's platform independant. While you are studying here you will usually work on a Windows machine. If you are used to working on a Mac you will hardly notice the difference: you will be inside the Adobe environment and this is platform independant.
Extra help
During the courses you can use your coach's knowledge to help you along. You can send in files and of course, homework. Homework is checked: since we choose to correct homework by hand this results in high quality training.
The location
The courses take place in Amsterdam. Our location is easily accessed by car, tram, bus, metro and even train. There is a railway station around the corner.
Companies and groups of individuals sometimes prefer in-company training. This makes working with company files easier. Call us for the options for in company training: 020 6820080.
Software
Software trials
During the courses we use the latest software version and the one right before it. You can try out the software here during class and download a trial from the Adobe website. A trial is fully functional for a month.
Purchasing hardware and software
As a reseller for both Adobe software and Wacom tablets you can buy these products from us. Of course we are available for advice prior to purchasing the hardware or software.

What is Dreamweaver?
Dreamweaver is an Adobe application, just like Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and Flash. Dreamweaver is used to build websites with dynamic content and to maintain existing websites. It is also used to create and maintain online portfolio's and intranet websites.
The application was developed by Macromedia, the company that also developed Flash and Firewors: a complete package for webdesigners that allowed them to build websites (Dreamweaver), interactive animations (Flash) and to edit and create graphics for the web (Fireworks). The professionality of the application was clear from the beginning: web designers increasingly started using Dreamweaver. Since Adobe's own GoLive was not a success Adobe decided to overtake Macromedia. This was done in 2005. Dreamweaver was part of the Adobe suites since version CS3. And of course, Flash and Fireworks also became Adobe applications.
Dreamweaver allows you to see both design and code which means you can keep an eye on the changes you apply in real time. The application creates clean HTML code. In short: Dreamweaver is used to create and maintain web pages and complete websites and web-based systems. Simple or complex websites turn out to be easy to create in Dreamweaver and integration with other CMS systems is possible.

When do I need Dreamweaver?
You need Dreamweaver if you want to craete and maintain websites. Of course there are other tools on the market but Dreamweaver has been a proven tool for professionals for years, allowing for great flexibility and options. Powerful integration of extra tools, a user friendly interface and the implementation of the latest guidelines and regulations of the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) make the program an attractive and safe one to work with.

Aren't Content Management Systems (CMS) as Joomla better?
This type of system is very different. If you want to build a website from scratch, matching your own design, you will have to jump through quite a few hoops to make these systems comply to your needs. Dreamweaver allows you to start with your own design and build it without any restrictions whatsoever. This results in the website you want, making no concessions to a strict template.
Of course there are ways to trick and tweak the templates in such CMS but it will save you time to use Dreamweaver.
The code behind all CMS is HTML. If something goes wrong you will have to know what to do. Knowing and implementing HTML code is a crucial element of any web designer's work.
Since you are completely free in Dreamweaver this means you have to start from scratch or use existing templates. During the Dreamweaver Course you learn how to do it all yourself. The Dreamweaver Advanced Course still does not use existing templates: you will instead learn how to build your own.

How can I become a good webdesigner?
Of course this is a process that will take time. A good designer will have to use the proper techniques, keep an eye on developments and learn all about good website design and layout. This process takes time. On the whole you will need to read all about Internet developments, code and design. Keep an eye on the browser developments and HTML and CSS development. And learn how to use graphics software such as Photoshop and Illustrator to help you create good layouts and graphics for the web.
» Top
What skills and programs do I need to become a web designer?
That is a good question. In practice you will not only need Dreamweaver. You will often be expected to work with graphics and to be able to edit them. Or you will be asked to create an animation, even an interactive one. To design a website you will not use Dreamweaver but you will need an application in which you can move the elements and objects around until they form a good layout.
In short: you will most often need the following applications:
Adobe Illustrator to design the website. In Illustrator you can easily move the objects around and change colours, sizes and shapes quickly. Ideal!
Adobe Photoshop to edit photographic material. Don't forget cropping and resizing is something you will need to do often, and that is only the most simple thing you will learn during our Photoshop Course.
Adobe Flash to create interactive animations.
» Top
I know Flash, what's the difference with Dreamweaver?
Flash is an application that allows you to create animations. And these animations are most commonly used on web pages.
Even though Flash gives you the possibility to create one big animation that looks like a website there are drawbacks. Flash is only available for visitors that have the Flash plug-in. And I think you may have heard all about the problems with Apple refusing to allow Flash on it's iPhones. If you build your website in only Flash, no one can see it on it's iPhone. That would be too bad. If you want to use Flash to build a website animation please create a non-Flash version of the website using Dreamweaver or any other CMS.

Will I learn HTML during the Dreamweaver Course?
You most definitely will. You have to know this code. So it is part of the course. You will start from scratch to know the code by heart and later on you will recognize this powerful yet easy to learn code in all the CMS you use and in every web editor, giving you the power to change things and tweak settings of pages as you see fit.
» Top
Is HTML code difficult?
No, HTML is not difficult at all. You can think of it as a new, simple language. A language in which you explain to the browser that an image is coming up, or a paragraph. You will see that it's much simpler than you think, and fun to learn.
Have a look at this basic code for example, it's the code for an HTML page.
<html>
<head>
<title>Type a title for your page here</title>
</head>
<body>
Type some text here, this will be visible on your web page.
</body>
</html>
You can use the above code and more to write fully functional web pages. Of course they would be a bit bland and dull, you need images and more text, even interactive elements. All this will be addressed during the Dreamweaver Course.
» Top
Why should I learn HTML code?
You will have to know HTML for many reasons.
For one, you need it to tweak Dreamweaver settings and options and to correct things that go wrong. Suppose you want to make a few words red and a whole line becomes red. You have no idea what goes wrong and Dreamweaver doesn't help. You will have to look at the code to find out why this happens, realise that it's actually correct and then tweak the code to get what you want: the right way.
Furthermore, you will be asked to maintain websites or to optimize them: SEO. Knowledge of HTML is essential to get what you want from the search results.
If you use Content Management Systems you will often not see the code and not be able to change results. But if you know code, you can tweak the files anyway and apply settings that are beyond the possibilities of the CMS you're using.
It's really quite simple, give us a call for more information.

I have an older Dreamweaver version. Does this create different code?
Adobe listens carefully to the guidelines of the developers of HTML and CSS during the development of the software. These guidelines have to be implemented to make sure you create proper code.
So yes, older Dreamweaver versions can create different code. It is possible to generate code that newer browsers don't have to respect anymore. A good example is the 'font' tag, this has been outlawed for a few years and even though browsers will respect older code for a few years chances are that in a few years, not a single browser will respect formatting with the font tag. Which is a good thing.
So things to be aware of are places where they offer courses for older versions of Dreamweaver, such as 'Dreamweaver MX'. This is a version from 2002 that has no clue about the developments in 2010, the time of HTML5 and CSS3.
You can however still use older Dreamweaver versions for, for instance, SEO. Some interface options are less intuitive but it's very doable to use it.
» Top
I know FrontPage, is Dreamweaver really better?
Now let's be honest: FrontPage is not a very good application. It generates more code than you want and is often nog very user friendly and inpredictable or difficult to tame. If you know all the ins and outs of this Microsoft application though chances are you will not want to switch to Dreamweaver. But just give it a try. You will probably find it very intuitive to work with and will soon discover all sorts of advantages. We strongly recommend it. But don't take our word for it, simply try it out. you could download the trial and come in for the Dreamweaver Course. You wouldn't be the first student to welcome the change.
» Top
Which Dreamweaver Course should I attend?
Which course should be attended depends on what you want to learn and of your level of expertise. If, for instance, you only want to learn how to maintain websites the Dreamweaver Course should be enough. If you want to professionally create websites however, you will need the Dreamweaver Course Advanced as well. And if you want to do it all and even be able to edit the graphics clients send to you so they can be used on websites, you will most defininitely need the Webdesigner Master Education.
All courses can be conducted in either English or Dutch.
